DISNEY FINE ART AND WALL DECOR

Walt Disney Animation Art

Limited-edition artwork on cel paying homage to the traditional animation ptocess by faithfully depicting characters as they appeared in animated films and shorts. Available as Sericels (printed via the fine-art process of serigraphy) and Hand-Painted cels (created by hand by Ink and Paint Artists on the Disney Studio Lot in California).

CREATING AN IMAGE

The Hand-Inked, Hand-Painted Cel Process

"Concept Painting"

In the early stages of feature animation, concept paintings are created to establish the tone and style of key scenes in the film. They are a guideline for artists at every stage of the animation process, and the root of inspiration for hand-inked, hand-painted cels as well.

"Clean-up Drawing"

After further development through the storyboard process and initial character sketches, a "clean-up" artist converts the rough animation drawings into finished drawings with smooth outlines.

"Fully Inked, Partially Painted Cel"

The pencil drawing is carefully inked onto acetate by hand with various coloured inks, and then the cel is hand painted with colours formulated exclusively in the Disney paint lab. All the paints are mixed by hand and are matched to the original colours in the film.

"Fully Inked, Fully Painted Cel"

The length of time it takes to complete a cel varies, depending on the intricacy of the art and the number of colours involved. It's not uncommon for a single character in a cel to have 30 colours.

"Composed Cel Painting with Background"

Once the cels are completely painted, they are placed on a lithographic reproduction of the original animation background. Before any cel is sold, it goes through an inspection process to ensure that it meets Disney's high standards.

Limited-Edition Sericel Process

"Colour Model Sheet"

The sericel process begins by selecting a character image and then developing a hand-inked, hand-painted colour model. The original artist's colour key, indicating the number and placement of the colours, is used by the serigrapher in the production.

"Silk Screens"

An artist cuts a separate stencil for every colour in the image, each of which will be painted separately on the cel. The stencils are then developed onto silk screens and checked for exact registration.

"Mixing The Paint Colours"

The paint colours are mixed to precisely match the colour model. Beginning with the line drawing, as many as 35 colours are layered on one at a time.

"Applying the Paint"

Each colour is forced through the silk screen as the cels are hand-fed through the printer, with each colour requiring a separate pass. In keeping with original animation technique, the paint is applied to the back side of the cel.

"Finished Cel"

As each colour is applied, the image comes to life, capturing your favourite Disney character in a limited-edition artwork.

FINE-ART REPRODUCTION

"Serigraph"

For each colour of the original illustration, a separate stencil is hand cut. The stencil is transferred to a mesh screen -- one for each colour -- and the paper is hand fed through the press as many times as there are colours, creating a richly textured final print that captures the vibrancy of the original painting.

"Giclee"

This process produces a fine-art print directly from a digital animation file. After the original illustration is scanned into a computer, artists skillfully perfect the colours. The digitally re-created artwork is printed onto museum-quality, acid-free paper or canvas with a an enhanced printer, specially modified for fine-art reproduction.

"Hand Pulled Lithography"

Colour separations are created to capture every nuance of the original painting's hue. Each colour is hand inked onto a specially prepared aluminium plate. Museum-quality paper is placed by hand through the press -- once for each colour -- transferring the custom-made colour plate to the paper.

"Enhanced Lithography"

Enhanced lithography have a unique feeling of depth through the emphasis of certain colours. After one colour separation is made, specially selected colours are reseparated and enhanced so that it appears the character is "Popping" off the bachground.
